A CAC Story for the Final Week

For my final project I told the story of the UMW Women’s basketball team’s CAC championship win, a team and win I am fortunate to be a part of. What is special about this final assignment is that I am telling the same story of that day, but through 4 different outlets: writing, audio, photography, and video.

For the writing portion I constructed a poem.

For the photography portion I constructed a collage.

A CAC Story

For the video portion I constructed a a video showcasing the score on a whiteboard. I filmed myself writing on the board, which actually took about 10 minutes, and the sped it up on iMovie, as well as some other editing stuff with color and lighting.

For the audio piece I constructed an interview of all my teammates.

This final assignment embodied the most important element I learned from the class this semester. Using technology, I told them same exact story in the same chronological order and each one is entirely different. I think that is what makes digital storytelling so special. These tools can not only be used for creative outlets, as I did for this assignment, but for marketing techniques and other things in the job force. The possibilities are truly endless which is why it will always remain so exciting. I am glad to have learned the different techniques and skills to be able to create these pieces of art.

Kelsey’s Closet

I througly enjoyed this assignment. I never even knew you could do this with legitamate websites. I chose the Nike website because I wear a lot of athletic clothes, pretty much everyday. This is why I renamed the Nike website Kelsey’s closet, especially since UMW is sponsored by Nike. Since I wear it a lot, I thought it was appropriate. I used X-ray goggles to create my “new” site. The site was very helpful with step by step examples

Friends vs Emojis Tutorial

I really enjoyed  this assignment and would recommend it for anyone who loves emojis..and/or their friends! This assignment is pretty self-explanatory, so I knew what I wanted to do for it, but I think the biggest struggle in completing it is finding a good resource to construct it with. That is what I am going to help students with today!

So this first couple steps of this assignment are simple.

1)Find an emoji/emojis you would like to use.

2) Find a friend/friends you would like to use.

Now this is where I come in to help. I found an extremely helpful wesbiste called BeFunky. This is the site I used to create my emoji/friend mash up.

When you get to the homepage of the site, there are three tabs at the top of the page.

Click the Collage Maker Tab.

Once you click the Collage Maker tab, this screen will pop up. You select the third icon on the side bar with the four squares. This is the display layout tab. Once you get there, you click Create Your Own.

Once you do this, your blank canvas will appear. Then you go to the first icon on the left hand side to import pictures from your computer.

Once you have imported your pictures, they will appear in the image manager.

You simply drag them wherever you want on the page. You can layer them or align them; it is up to you. You can do the same with text boxes. There is an array of fonts and colors to chose from for your text.

Once you are satisfied with your creation, you go to the top of the page and click save. From the save button you can  export it to social media or just save it on your computer.

And there you have it! Hope this helped people who are stumped with what to use to make their creation!

Here is my final product using the site!

Movie Essay

Instead of analyzing a particular scene, I decided to analyze the trailer for the movie Django Unchained .A trailer has to contain the perfect photo angles, edits, and effects because this could make or break the amount of tickets sold for the movie. It highlights the importance of constructing a great trailer.

The trailer tends to capture a lot of wide shots at the beginning of the slaves traveling across acres of land. It sets the general stage for what the audience is about to see. It then zooms in on each slave in the line. When it gets to Jamie Foxx’s character it switches camera angle three times. It signifies Foxx as a main character. It’s important to ignite emotion during a trailer to keep people interested so it goes back and forth between a conversation between Django (Jamie Foxx) and Dr. King Shultz (Christoph Waltz) and other scenes from the movie. It shows that the movie is going to revolve around their relationship. Also seeing them up close and person after seeing the zoomed out scenes allows the audience to continue to be reminded of the emotions I their face.

I also really liked the use of a gunshot as a transition. Every time someone shot a gun in transitioned to another scene as the bullet went across the scene. It keeps the audience engaged even though there is a lot of shuffling across different parts of the movie.

Overall, I liked how the lighting and transitions from zoomed in to zoomed out stayed consistent. It is very appealing for the viewer. If I had not seen the movie, it would interest me enough to want to see it.

Let the 20 Minute Countdown Begin

This was too fun!! I think this idea was is very clever. It had me running around everywhere. It was like a game and I love a good challenge.  I really enjoyed this activity.
